Vector Fleet Management, an Amerit Fleet Solutions Company, is seeking a Diesel/Fire Apparatus Mechanic/Technician to join our team in the San Bernadino, CA area.

 

Compensation: Competitive Hourly Pay - Paid weekly, every Friday! $40–$48/hr (equivalent to $79,040–$93,600 annually, depending on experience and certifications)

 

Shift: M-F 7am-3:30pm

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

What the Diesel/Fire Apparatus Mechanic/Technician role looks like:

  • General Diesel & Fire Apparatus Maintenance
    • Diagnose, perform preventive maintenance, and repair medium- to heavy-duty diesel trucks and related vehicles.
    • Conduct inspections and repairs on firefighting apparatus, service vehicles, and pumps.
    • Road test and transport vehicles, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.
  • Advanced Repair & Specialized Work
    • Perform engine rebuilds, transmission and differential assembly, valve grinding, piston fitting, brake system reconditioning, and suspension repairs.
    • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and fuel systems, ignitions, and vehicle-specific fire equipment (sirens, pumps, medical systems).
    • Conduct electrical system overhauls and welding work (electrical and acetylene).
  • Shop & Compliance
    • Maintain detailed service records and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
    • Coordinate with the shop manager to prioritize workflows and meet project deadlines.
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Key Competencies and Minimum Education

What our ideal candidate looks like:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 4 years of hands-on diesel mechanic experience OR 2 years in a fire department as a mechanic.
  • At least 2 years of fire apparatus maintenance experience preferred.
  • Valid California Driver’s License required; Class A or B CDL strongly preferred. 
  • Acceptable driving record, ability to pass background check and drug screening.
  • Complete set of hand tools and wheeled toolbox for daily use.
  • Strong ability to carry out oral and written instructions and maintain repair records.
  • ASE certifications and/or OEM training preferred.

Working Conditions

Working Conditions:

 

  • Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job.
  • Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, diesel fumes and noise.
  • Exposure to chemicals, oils, greases or other irritants
  • Access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance
  • Ability to move and position heavy objects
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel and crawl to repair vehicles
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
